The Fort Smith Board of Directors on Tuesday approved $15,000 in funding for Juneteenth Freedom Fest after what one director called years of "slaps in the face" to the event.

The Fort Smith Board of Directors on Tuesday approved recommendations for spending $227,700 in assistance for outside agencies that did not include money for the Juneteenth Freedom Fest. Before the vote, several citizens during the meeting asked the board to fund the event.
